WILMINGTON, NC – New Hanover Regional Medical Center has achieved five stars from Healthgrades in stroke care. Healthgrades is an online resource for information about physicians and hospitals.

This achievement is part of the Healthgrades 2020 Report to the Nation, which underscores the importance of hospital quality to both consumers and hospital leaders. Every year, Healthgrades evaluates hospital performance at nearly 4,500 hospitals nationwide for 32 of the most common inpatient procedures and conditions using Medicare data.

Stroke is a leading cause of disability and death in our region. NHRMC admitted about 1,200 stroke patients last year.

“Our organization is committed to providing quality stroke care,” said James McKinney, MD, FAHA, NHRMC Stroke Program Medical Director. “We are proud to have been recognized by Healthgrades for seven years in a row.”

NHRMC is certified by DNV GL – Healthcare as a Comprehensive Stroke Center, reflecting the highest level of competence for treatment of serious stroke events.

Led by a vascular neurologist, NHRMC’s stroke team includes physicians, nurses, pharmacists, therapists, and other healthcare professionals working together to provide comprehensive, coordinated care, including advanced procedures such as surgical thrombectomy. Their goal is to improve outcomes by providing treatments based on national standards of care.
